Dry All Night Printable

I heard about the book Dry All Night: The Picture Book Technique That Stops Bedwetting by Alison Mack last month.  We, like most families, have had trouble with figuring how to help our child figure out how to stop peeing in the bed at night.  Honestly, no one talks about it.

I had my son in cloth diapers from newborn until three years old, but all of the sudden the cloth diapers weren't enough.  The soakers weren't enough.  Nothing was enough.  I had done my motherly service by keeping the chemical laden diapers from my toddler's tushy and all of the sudden I'm forced to put him into pull ups.  Either that or let him wet the bed.  Every night.  Sheets to launder every day.  Are those really choices?

Honestly, I wish they had a younger version of this book.  Dry All Night is great, but younger children of age 4 and 5 haven't developed a sense of shame over wetting the bed unless a parent has shamed them.  The book has the little girl acting ashamed about her peeing in bed.  At 6 or 7 when they are in school, they start to think they are the only ones and are ashamed to have this 'bad habit.'  The book is more for children around 6 or 7.  Still, it's extremely helpful regardless for the technique and visualization exercises.

Maybe I'll write my own e-book soon for children who are younger and need help thinking through how to control their bladder muscle.

Since Dry All Night was written in 1989 there are no current resources for this book.  There is a chart in the book, but, honestly, it's a little boring.  I googled "Dry All Night SCOREBOARD" to see if I could find a copy of the chart in the book, but it isn't online.  So I designed a new one with a splash of color.  If you happen to have sought out this book in a desperate attempt to help your child to gain control of their bladder muscle . . . I hope this is a huge help to you.

The above graphic is just the jpeg file:

Please remember that this is my design of the chart in the book and as such you need to link back to my blog in order to share the file ethically.  Thank you for remembering this.

Why Making Printables Is a Lot Like Photography

My husband loves photography and I love designing Printables.  At first, I couldn’t see how either could have anything in common, but the more I understood about photography the more I could see the same things being true of Printables.  Whether you are a photographer or a Printable designer, I am pretty sure you can appreciate this list of similarities.

Original vs Copies

Photographers have an especially hard time being original.  Those just getting into photography often look to the greats and mimic, copy, and recreate their photos.  The same is true with Printable designers.  While there is so much room for creativity since Printables have only been around for a few years, so many new Printable designers simply pick their favorite designer and mimic, copy, and recreate their Printables.  Within the world of photography and the world of Printables, the artists need to remember to embrace new ideas and always look for ways to be unique and to do their own thing.  Collect ideas but always make them into something new!

Paid vs Freebies

In the age of digital media, photos and Printables flood social media, websites, and blogs.  What was once unique and treasured becomes cheapened by the mere volume of accessibility!  Why buy a photo when you can go to Flickr, pick a photo that has been made accessible to the public, and print it at home?  Why buy a printable when you can go to a blog, click on Freebies, and print it out immediately?  Why does the Flickr photographer give her product away?  Maybe recognition or it may be just a hobby.  Why does the blog writer spend time producing Printables to give them away?  Maybe to get more hits on her blog or because she does it for a hobby.  However, the existence of free photos and free Printables, doesn’t take away the legitimacy of photographers who charge for their art or Printable designers who charge for their work.

Paid photographers value their work and are not interested in giving away their work.  They prize the time they spend on their subjects and they expect others to see the value of their efforts.  Whether it’s their unique talent, experience, and/or style, they are desirable and people pay money to have prints of their photos.  The same is true with paid Printable designers.  They spend time researching for their Printables and expect others to see the value of their efforts.  They have a unique talent, experience, and/or style that sets them apart.  These photographers and designers are artists who place worth on their time, efforts, and styles and this makes them stand out in the community of digital media.

Experienced vs Amateurs

Most people know the difference between a photo that has been taken by an amateur versus that of an experienced photographer.  One looks crisp, organized, and draws you to it, while the other leaves you missing something.  Not everyone knows the difference between an experienced Printable designer and an amateur.  An inexperienced Printable designer may use tons of color on their Printables and the Printable can end up looking glorious, but imagine printing these out a few times.  Printables with blocks of color use up tons of ink over time and end up costing the buyer way more money as they replace ink cartridges.  An amateur Printable designer may also oversimplify their design.  Title, list, and table.   While this may be useful, it is not enjoyable to use!  In contrast, experienced Printable designer uses just enough color to make the Printable fun, but respects the ink cartridges of their buyer.  In addition, they make their design compelling and enjoyable to use.  They have their own design and unique style elements that show their effort.  In addition, look for photographers who have schooling in photography and Printable designers who have experience in graphic design, interior design, or home organizing.

Successful vs Popular

This category is hard to calculate.  Within the world of photography and Printables, many artists sacrifice success to be popular.  Instead of revering their work as something meaningful, they may use it as a means to gain social media popularity.  Photographers give away their photos by using good quality images on their blogs that are easily copied and enjoy the feedback from fans rather than looking to other photographers in their profession to recognize the quality of their work.  Who cares if a random follower from Spain said that their photo is the most beautiful sunset he’s ever seen?  Are these photographers wanting success or are they simply wanting popularity?

The same is true with Printable designers.  Printables are popular!  Every SaHM and working mother and SaHD and working dad (okay, a little less with the dads), are enamored by the selection of Printables now available online.  Though in the world of blogs, most people think that popular = success, is it really true?  If people line up to access the latest Printable at the popular mother blog, are they staying to read her special words?  A blogger’s success is not based on how many hits she (or he) gets.  It’s based on readership, relationships, and loyalty.  Giving away free Printables to gain popularity gets more hits and more money, but does not necessarily create a successful blog.  Whether in photography or Printables, success can be a lot different than popularity.

Consistency vs One Shot Wonder

A landscape photographer can take one hundred shots and end up with two good prints or a seasoned landscape photographer can take twenty and half of them are print worthy.  One is a one shot wonder type and the other is a consistent photographer.  Printable designers can be similar.  Enter the shop of a Printable designer and you can see many useful tools, but which ones actually make your life better and are worth using?  You could buy a package of 80 and realize that only 20 are really beneficial.  Keep looking, find a Printable designer who has a smaller package with Printables that are well thought through, organized, and are all helpful.  Consistency is key in both photography and Printables.

Key Points
·         Look for originality in photos and Printables
·         Consider what you want and be willing to pay for it
·         Seek photographers and Printable designers who are experienced
·         Support photographers and designers who are seeking more than just popularity
·         Buy the set of photos that demonstrate consistency or the package of Printables that are all well developed

As a Designer

Let me be a little more personal in my ending.  This blog is meant to be informational for those considering the realm of photography and Printables.  As a designer, I don’t want to classify myself within this blog rather I prefer to let my buyers and clients make their decisions about my work.  I would love to call myself the super professional Printable designer, but I’m still learning and growing even with my background in Interior Design.  We all are.  I hope reading this has taught you a little more about photography and a little more about Printables.  Thank you for spending your time here with me at Designing Life’s Blog!

Today's download is a double feature!  Two for the price of . . . well nothing!  The Goal Making Worksheet is for making intentional goals with God's help.  It asks important questions like, what is the vision that God has given you, what is your passion, what are four steps to walk toward the vision that God has placed in your life.  It even has a place for verses to spur you on as you walk through those steps.  The second sheet is a Yearly Goal Sheet, consider this your sophisticated and well thought out resolution printable.  The areas are broken down for you so you can really think through the parts of your life that you want to change and make better.  Happy New Year too! ;-)

Gift Week Day 6 - Privilege Ladder Printable

Oooo yea!  Christmas Eve!  I wait all year long for Christmas to come around and here it is, tomorrow is Christmas!  What are some of your favorite Christmas traditions?  Do you open some presents the night before Christmas or do you wait for the big day?  Do you bake a special kind of treat or breakfast for Christmas?  Our family has turkey and ham for dinner on Christmas, what is your families Christmas meat of choice?  I'd love to know what people do in other countries.  As I wait for my mouth to stop watering after talking about Christmas dinner, please check out my gift to you for today!  Thanks for stopping by!

Day 6 - Privilege Ladder Printable

When I first designed this printable, I had the activities a bit mixed up.  After having my son grow and begin to show interest in most of the privileges on this list, I realized that I need to reprioritize the list!  As parents, we are our children's guardian; we decide what influences are a part of their life and when they need to have some alone time or have earned extra video game time.  This privilege ladder allows parents to show children that as they make good choices they move up on the ladder to better privileges and when they act badly and make bad choices they move down on the ladder and are unable to have some privileges.  I hope you find this list helpful for your family and building up your children!

Gift Week Day 5 - Psalm 54:4 Wall Art Printable

I can't believe there are only two more days before Christmas!  Also can't believe we only just got our tree, but they are harder to come by in Italy.  So if you've been following along and downloading files each day this week, you may wonder what Designing Life is all about.  Lately, I haven't been posting many Interior Design focused blogs because in my life Designing Life has become about so much more than just home decor and design.  The focus of my blog is to encourage others to intentionally design their lives, to really look at the way they are living life and make it count.  Whether that is having a pretty house for hospitality, eating the right things for health, intentionally parenting not just watching kids grow up, or keeping the house organized for sanity sake, each one is important at a different time of life.  The one thing that I know to be important at all times of life is faith.  My philosophy of designing life is based on the fact that I believe that we are all intentionally designed.  The ultimate designer created people who are also creative.  So God makes these amazing people with these amazing minds and the ability to have more children who are amazing and have amazing minds, so isn't it natural to think that we should intentionally design our lives accordingly?  Just existing doesn't do it.  Living life for God does.  I hope you now understand more about what Designing Life is all about and what's up with such a name as Designing Life.  If you are looking for was to add Jesus into your Christmas celebration this year, please check out my blog post 17 Verses to Read on Christmas Morning with a Devotional Included.  God bless and Merry Christmas!

Day 5 - Psalm 54:4 Wall Art Printable 5 x 7

I love having verses hanging on the wall, written on post-it notes, or scrawled across the bathroom mirror.  In particular, I remember a verse that says, "Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads" (Deuteronomy 11:18, NIV 84).  What better thing than having a constant reminder that God is our helper and the upholder of our life?  This printable is designed as a 5 x 7 which means it can be cut to fit into a 5 x 7 frame.  It will print out as a regular 8 1/2 by 11 sheet so you have options!  I'm feeling more and more like Santa these days!  Ho ho ho! Merry Christmas!  Enjoy your gift printable!

Gift Week Day 3 - Motivational To Do List Printable

Twas the Craziness Before Christmas

Twas the Thursday before Christmas and the house is a mess,
The children are running, Mom needs a rest,
The stockings were hung on the mantle with care,
Until the kids decided to use them on top of their hair.

The children are finally asleep in their beds,
Gladly, because Mom and Dad were almost out of their heads.
So Mom and Dad rushed to get all the presents wrapped,
Wishing for even a hint of a nap.

With all of the rushing and all of the clatter
Is there one person left who remembers what matters?
In all of this hustle and bustle this year,
Remember the One who makes everything clear.

I am glad that blogging is helping me to remember what is so important about Christmas.  Reflection is dear when everything is so busy.  For me, I get so caught up in it all that time to reflect seems like an impossible task, but it's absolutely a must.  Even for five minutes, two . . . one?  Whatever time you have to take and reflect on why we do this thing called Christmas is precious.  Merry Christmas!  Here's today's gift!

Day 3 - Motivational To Do List

This printable was designed just for this gift week!  I've always used this method to spur me on in my chores and activities, but I had never made a printable to make it easy.  The checklist to the left is self-explanatory.  You check of each item as you complete it.  The task and rewards though is where I find the eagerness to continue.  I write one task then a reward to follow.  Most times my rewards are letting myself have 20 minutes to surf Pinterest (set a timer!), watching 15 minutes of a show (then pause and continue the next task), or writing a blog.  My rewards are things I enjoy doing . . . the tasks not so much.  Today, I am using the list to encourage my house cleaning.  I am cleaning toilets, then writing a blog, then cleaning the shower, and designing a printable, then sweeping the floors, then prepping another blog.  The list continues . . . you probably won't continue if I don't stop my list ;-)  I hope you find this helpful in your home and motivational to your to dos!

DIY Potty Training Chart

Today, I decided to face up to the fact that my three year old son, who is mostly potty trained, really needed some more encouragement to make it all the way.  Some days my son will stop what he is doing to run to the bathroom to take care of business (especially if it’s number twos), when he has to just pee . . . he doesn’t always stop playing.  He waits until the last possible second and often that is one second too long!

The End of Wet Pants

My idea was to make a DIY Potty Chart to help my son recognize the goal and work towards it.  I pulled out my supplies (as seen in the picture below) and I got to work.

DIY Potty Chart Instructions

1.  I personalized the top of the chart with his name and called it a Pee Pee Potty Chart.  You may need a Pee and Poo Potty Chart, but I wanted this to fit my little guy’s issue.

2.  Then I wrote down the days of the week, who knows, maybe he’ll learn those while we are at it!  On the end I made a star to symbolize his reward upon success.

3. I made blank boxes where I planned to either stick a sticker or pin a pin.  This was a work in progress.  (I also cut the chart at this point to make it rectangular and fit to the drawing size.)

4.  I grabbed my train edge puncher to get my son to really like the chart.  He loves trains!  So I punched the bottom with the train punch.  If I were to make it again, I would punch every side.

5.  I cut out squares that would fit into the blank boxes on the chart.  The last one was smaller so I could just write in the rewards that would encourage him.

Need an edge punch?  This one is adorable.

6.  I wrote encouraging words on each square for each day.  On the backs, I wrote numbers so he could match the number on the square with the number on the boxes (that I then wrote numbers in).

7.  I wrote three rewards in the smaller rectangles.  I picked things that we do not do as often that I know he loves to do . . . or eat!

I decided that I will either put a magnetic surface behind the chart and attach magnets to each of the encouraging boxes or perhaps attach the square and rectangle boxes to clothespins to clip onto the chart.

Potty Chart Rules:  For my son, he gets to attach the days square to the chart when he makes it through the whole day with no accidents.  At the end of the week, if he has the appropriate amount of success squares, then he gets his reward.  You may want to start with success three days a week to spur on your child rather than hoping for the whole week.  Add on a day whenever you think your child is ready.

Since I recognize that many mothers are so busy with work and all the other things that life throws at us, I decided to make a printable version of the Potty Chart for anyone who wants to simply order the chart, print, and go with it.  Below is the picture of the printable chart with printable pieces and the link to my Etsy page.

I hope the DIY instructions for the Potty Chart give you some ideas for your little one and good luck with your potty training!!!

How to Make a Household Management Binder

Home Binder Cover | Designing Life Etsy Shop

How to Make a Household Management Binder

Putting together a household management binder is as easy as you make it!  Get the right supplies, find the right printables, and you can be in business in less than a week.

I'll help you find the right:

home binder, binder dividers, home binder sheet protectors, and well designed printables

The Binder

While it may be obvious with the title "Household Management Binder," but I will repeat, you need a binder.  You may want to start with one 1" binder and expand to a 2" or you can make multiple binders to suit your many household needs.  The typical Home Management Binder is home to calendars, schedules, meal planning, cleaning lists, grocery lists, addresses, passwords, babysitter’s instructions, and many more pre-planning worksheets and lists.

Here are four things to look for when buying your binder:

1.  Buy a binder that will grow with your planning
2.  Find a binder with an outer clear pocket so you can label the binder clearly
3.  Buy the sturdiest binder you can find
4.  Go with a binder that will hold a 8 1/2" by 11" sheet of paper and sheet protectors

My Amazon Finds - Binders

Dividers for Each Section

In addition to a binder, it is helpful to have dividers for each section in your household management notebook.  If you are only going to use it for meal planning and cleaning schedules, then you may want to buy dividers to separate your current meal planning sheets, past meal planning sheets (great for referencing), your cleaning schedules, and any cleaning checklists or shopping lists you may have.  You can even throw in a divider for your couponing.  Buy as many dividers as you have sections for your family’s binder.

Here are four things to look for when buying dividers:

1.  Buy dividers with large tabs, nothings worse than not being able to read your own tab
2.  Go with tabs that you write directly onto, the tab inserts can get lost on the others
3.  Look for brightly colored dividers to make each section stand out
4.  Again, durability is important; you may use some of your sections daily

My Amazon Finds - Dividers

Sheet Protectors

Some of your organizational printables will not be written on often, but are frequently used for reference.  You may want to buy sheet protectors to keep these sheets looking great all year long.  Yearly Calendars, Important Date sheets, and Ideal Weekly Schedules are some printable home management sheets that you may want to keep in sheet protectors.

Here are four things to look for when buying sheet protectors:

1.  Choose a plastic sheet protector that has a clear surface without texture
2.  Spend a little for sheet protectors that are higher in quality
3.  Pay attention to how wide the sheet protectors are for your binder
4.  Find a package with the right amount; the more you buy the less expensive they are

My Amazon Finds – Sheet Protectors

Printable Household Management Pages

The point of having a household management binder is to have all of your home organizational planning accessible by flipping open a binder and easily finding the right section with just the right printable.  We have the binder and the ability to easily access the right section, but what of the right printable?  How do you find the right printable for you and your household?

Here are four things to look for when buying printables:

1.  Find printables that will help you save time by planning ahead
2.  Buy printable with an attractive design that will encourage you in your planning
3.  Look for printables that you will actually use; all printables won't be a perfect fit for you
4.  Mix and match, remember that there are many printable designers with great sheets

Note: Let's be honest.  These days, you can find so many printable resources online for free.  However, not all that glitters is gold.  Consider supporting small businesses who have spent meticulous hours in preparing PDF files that are perfect not just bloggers who are putting out quickly prepared printables in order to gain traffic.

Hole Puncher

After you begin your search for the best printables for your home organization binder, you will realize that you really need a dependable hole puncher.  I have two hole punchers, one for my computer area and one for my craft area.

Here are four things to look for when buying a hole puncher:

1.  Buy a hole puncher that punches all three holes at the same time
2.  Go for the sturdiest hole puncher you can find
3.  Make sure the paper hole compartment at the bottom of the puncher stays on securely
4.  Find a hole puncher that can easily punch holes in multiple sheets at a time

My Amazon Finds – Hole Puncher

Perfect Pens

While most people just grab a pen and start writing, I think it is a great idea to think about what kind of pens are best for writing on your new printables.  Certain pens have ink that will bleed through to the next page, some will fade over time, and some do not leave the mark you intend to make on the page.  So really, the pen matters a lot!

Here are four things to look for when buying a pen:

1.  Leave the felt tips, the permanent sharpies, and the runny pens at the store
2.  Use a high quality ball tip pens for simple writing tasks
3.  For yearly sheets that you will use for reference, consider scrapbook quality pens
4.  Try out the pens at the store and find one that makes solid and obvious lines

Compilation of Tools

I hope this blog is a wonderful resource for you to help you to find the right tools for making your household management binder.  Trust me, if you find the time to put together a home organization / household management binder, you will be finding time in so many more places!  Enjoy designing your life!
